HD-DVD got the jump in the market with the most players and movies released, but Blu-Ray has been catching up lately and with the most studio support behind it could actually win the war.

If you're trying to pick a side, here's my advice...

First compare the specs. For all practical purposes, they're not that different, though Blu-Ray has the technological edge in some areas.

Next, and probably most importantly to most consumers, check the list of available movies in HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray. A few movie studios, like Paramount and Warner Bros., release their big titles on both formats, but all the other studios have chosen a side and are sticking to it. Blu-Ray has more studios lined up behind it, so it has the edge in terms of number of available titles, with lots more on the way.

So, if you ask me, I'd steer you toward Blu-Ray, but you should still do your homework. This site could help: http://www.thedigitalbeat.com/hddvd-bluray-which-is-better.html

I believe neither will win because there are already companies producing dual-format DVD players. LG just announced their HD-DVD/BluRay drive for $1200 at CES 2007. I think this will be a common trend, as both standards have been equally successful.

BluRay has a slight edge because Sony has sold over a million PS3's, which all contain BluRay. Microsoft is still working on selling their HD-DVD add-on.
