My nieces lovely miniature schaunzer has the vets baffled. He is 8 years old and is going blind, I have just read up on the breed and found that they can suffer from hereditary Progressive atrophy. (An eye condition} but besides that he is always ravenous, drinks load of water and, in general, not the dog he used to be. All symptoms of diabetes but tests are clear. There is blood and protein in his urine but not sugar. He has had injections for a prostrate problem but remains the same. His owner has spent £400 so far without finding a diagnosis. The next step apparently is an MRI scan that will cost her £1500.00 but if said scan finds "something" in the brain it is not treatable anyway. Has anybody any clue at all. Thanks.

Is she losing hair? Have them check for Cushings Disease, which is an over production of cortisone. My dog had it and she drank a lot of water. Also, her appetite was enormous. The test is a blood test over a timed period. Unfortunately, for my little one she was too far progressed for anything to be done.

edit: thatswhat, I am glad that you were successful. I never heard of any other one whoe dog had the disease.

is there any hair loss at all ? I had a dog with the same symptoms , but it had hairloss as well and after many hits and misses was diagnosed with "Cushings disease",.. your friend may want to look into that. I also had tests run for diabetes and he had prostate problems and UTI, since that were his symptoms/ problems , so I am glad we finally got a diagnosis, even though it wasn't a very good one.

Happy to say that 3 yrs later at 12 my dog is doing very well

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/vhPA3

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

Hey,
This program http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=549 helped me to improve my quality of life as a diabetic. The system asserts that it's able to reverse diabetes in as short as 3 weeks. I still think that diabetes is a chronic disease and can't be reversed but I really liked the book. It helped me watching everything related to my diabetes under a different perspective. That's why I recommend it.
Bye

This site explains cushings disease in dogs.
I'd seriously think about changing vets, and wouldn't go for that scan. Blood tests would have been the next step, after that an ultrasound. (Its a lot cheaper.)
Good luck.
