Often, I will buy a 28 oz can of crushed or whole tomatoes and only use a portion of it. I know you can't keep them for very long after opening, but I tend to always throw away the remaining because I don't know how long I can store it in the refrigerator?

If I put the remainder in an airtight container in the fridge, how long can I keep them?

i do the same thing. i try to make my dollars stretch. :) it will and should hold a little more than 3 days. it all depends also. if the canned foods have preservatives in them so they should keep longer than expected. that suggestion of freezing them is a great idea. what do you use the tomatoes for? you can make soup, spaghetti sauce, dips, and all sorts of things with tomatoes. you can always munch on salsa! (if you run out of ideas to use the tomatoes for) anyway, if the tomatoes smell or tastes sour toss it. i hope i was helpful~ happy cooking!

They should be good for 7 to 10 days, sometimes even longer in an airtight container.

Meat is generally 3 days. If you want the tomatoes to last long put them in a plastic bag on a paper towel. This should allow them to last a week or longer.

You can also freeze them

3-4 days in the fridge, 3-4 months in the freezer

Oh, and dont' keep them in the metal can unless you want tomatoes that will taste metallic. Transfer to plastic or glass.

about 1 week, just make sure you dont leave the tomatoes in the can too long because it creates a bacteria thats very harmful, that goes for any canned foods

If you start seeing mold on the lid I would throw them out. Just as a suggestion, you can freeze them!

Feed them to your dog and if you don't have a dog feed them to the cats in your neighborhood. I am pretty sure if they are hungry enough they will eat the left overs.
