You'd use good evening in the nighttime hours, starting from the late afternoon/early part of the night (for example, after 5pm).
Good night is mainly used as a farewell greeting when you are leaving someone's company.

In the literal sense, the meaning is the same. There is however a difference in the use of the expressions. "Good Evening" can be used as a greeting, if it is nightime and you meet someone at a party or something like that. When you say, "Good Night" you are generally saying, "Good Bye" as well. It's something you say when its late and you're going to leave and go home or what have you.

I think Good Evening is just a greeting--like Good Morning. We say Good Night when we are going to bed for the night.

In the British Isles "Good evening" is a greeting and "Good night" a parting salutation.
In the Caribbean area, "Good night" is used as a greeting after 6pm as well as a parting salutation.
The rules are therefore not quite so hard and fast as people think. I have learned to be flexible.

Good evening is a greeting or a wish you express towards an individual or individuals. For example a couple going to the Opera, you know and they pass you in the street.

Practice is also good for you. Role playing, so Imagine you are SUE, and your friendly neighbours are JANE and PETER.

Who says what lines?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Good evening! How are you?"

"Hello. We're fine. Nice to see you, you look so much better today.Have you recovered from the flu now?"

"Yes I have and thank you for the card, it was very neighbourly of you. Thank you. Are you going anywhere special?"

"Yes we are going to see, 'Cosi Fan Tuti', at the theatre tonight. It's a pity we didn't know you were well enough, you could have come with us."

"Oh thank you for your kind thoughts, but maybe another time. I hope you enjoy the opera. Have a good evening for me. I must go now, see you tomorrow. Good nght."

"Yes we'll see you tomorrow. Good night."
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you managed the exercise and it has helped your understanding.

In this short dialogue above I have demonstrated both good evening as an expression of meaning well and good night as a way of saying - Good bye or until we meet again.

I hope this is an easy enough explanation and that it suits your needs. Enjoy English.
