My husband and I would like to explore the area but I don't know where to begin/park car, what time of day is best to go, etc. We would prefer to do it without a guided tour. Any info will help

You can drive up to Haleakala, the volcanoe, without a guided tour. It is a park, so there is a big parking lot at the crater.and also an information center, and park employees. There are plenty of trails, marked that is that you can hike. Just ask the park ranger, and do not go off the trails. The best time to go really is early in the morning so you can see the sun rise, but you have to leave very early, as the sun rise is around 7am, and it takes an hour or two to get up there. You are driving up 10,000 ft. so it is cold up there, and now in winter, the road could be a bit slippery, because of ice.Once you reach the crater, you will be able to look inside it. It is worth seeing, as it is very beautiful up there.Drive slow and careful, and you will like this place, and bring warm cloths. Enjoy, Aloha.

Haleakala is pretty huge--- You can drive up to the observation point at the top, and then hike down a bit into the crater. Bring a lot of sun protection--- no shade and really high up, so lots of UV's. some people bicycle--- quite a trip if you are in excellent shape.
Then there are the Mauna Kahalawai or the Mountains of the Moon--- You can hike and camp there--- but it is kind of dangerous hiking--- and it is said the 'Spirits" who live there do not wish to be disturbed. I don't know how much credence you put is such things, but s*** happens to those who ignore local traditions.
To tell you truthfully, the locals are sometimes pretty unfriendly to outsiders. So watch your step, and be very respectful.
Mo' bettah you come Big Island... lots to hike here... people more laid back
