Ellie has been outside with my sons for a couple of hours late this afternoon. She was with them the whole time. When she came in, she vomited. My son then gave her water and she vomited again. She's just laying around now (which could just be because she is worn out from vomiting). Of course I am calling the vet in the morning, but what can we do in the meantime. There are no 24 hour emergency vets in our hick town.

additional info: She is a 3&1/2 month old Akita. She had vaccines and was dewormed last week.

She may have eaten something earlier on in the day and now has a gastro intestinal upset

Starve her out until the morning, give her gastro intestinal system time to settle. Don't give her water for the next few hours, then allow her small amounts (10 laps every 5 mins).

Keep a strict watch on her for the next 3 hours to ensure she isn't getting GDV (Gastro Dilation Volvus) which is when their stomach fills with air and swells then twists.
Signs are excessive panting, pain, not being able to settle collapse, sollen belly.

If this happens then you need to get to vet ASAP as death occurs very quickly!

A visit to the vet is very important if it's a regular thing. Don't wait.

Here's some good info:

What causes vomiting in dogs?
Vomiting is not a disease; rather, it is a symptom of many different diseases. Many cases of vomiting are self-limiting after a few days. Less commonly, vomiting may result from a serious illness, such as cancer. Even when vomiting is caused by mild illnesses, it may lead to death of the animal if treatment is not begun early enough to prevent severe fluid and nutrient losses.

How serious is vomiting in dogs?
We attempt to determine how sick the dog has become as a consequence of the vomiting. When the dog is systemically ill (i.e., more than one body system is involved), some of the following may be noted:

Diarrhea

Dehydration

Loss of appetite

Abdominal pain

High fever

Lethargy

Bloody vomiting

What types of tests are performed to find the cause?
If vomiting is associated with several of the above signs, a series of tests is done in the hope that a diagnosis may be made. When this can be done, more specific treatment may be initiated. Diagnostic tests may include radiography (x-rays) with or without barium, blood tests, biopsies of the stomach and intestinal tract, and exploratory abdominal surgery. Once the diagnosis is known, treatment may include special medications, diets, and/or surgery.

If your dog does not appear systemically ill from the vomiting, the cause may be less serious. Some of the minor causes of vomiting include stomach or intestinal viruses, stomach or intestinal parasites, and dietary indiscretions (such as eating garbage or other offensive or irritating materials).

A minimum number of tests are performed to rule out certain parasites and infections. These cases may be treated with drugs to control the motility of the intestinal tract, drugs that relieve inflammation in the intestinal tract, and, often, a special diet for a few days.

This approach allows the body's healing mechanisms to correct the problem. We expect improvement within 2-4 days; if this does not occur, we will make a change in medication or perform further tests to better understand the problem. Please keep us informed of lack of expected improvement so that we may manage the situation properly.

You said that your son's dog had been outside for a while, so the vomiting could have been caused from your dog eating grass. Eating grass is not harmful and the vomiting is just a side affect, there is no damage.

There could also be a problem:If your dog has any side affects like diarrhea. You do not not need to rush the dog to the vets.
Do not feed the dog excess water. Also if it is cold outside, make sure your dog stays inside in a warm place. After 12 hours and your dog does not vomit, give him a little food. For more help go to:http://www.seefido.com/html/what_to_do_if_your_dog_vomits.htm

I hope your dog gets better and I hoped that I helped!

What was she doing outside? Running around with kids? This could be exhaustion from a lot of play if that's what she did. Let her rest and all should be good.

If your son is sure she didn't get into anything, then I wouldn't worry so much and just pass it off as over-playing.

If, however, she continues to vomit, get diarrhea, pale and or tacky gums, labored breathing, convulsions or seizures, call a vet immediately, no matter where they are in any hick town!

Good luck.

Sometimes this happens to dogs...of course it could be bad if she ate an object or something possniess. did your dog eat recently? if not that could be a reason also if she ate grass when she was outside and ran around with your boys that could of upset her tummy.... it's normal.. just be concerned if she vomits alot in the next 24 hrs also check to see if she's running a high temp. it wouldn't hurt to take her to the vet tomorrow though. ***Akitas are pron to stomach problems but don't worry about that it's normal****

Just because she is vomiting and is acting weird doesnt mean she is necessarily pregnant. She may just be sick. All you can really do is wait and see. If the vet you took your bishon is a trusted vet and they said to just watch her than that is all you can do. If you are really worried than take her to another vet to get a second judgement. Just keep an eye on here and follow the vet's orders.

She probably just ate grass. Dogs and cats eat grass when they have a stomach ache and then it makes them throw up. She probably just has a stomach ache and os being lazy because when you have a stomach ache you dont like to be up. if shes not better by the morning call the vet but dont jump to any conclusions just yet. Dont force her to eat anything just put some food out maybe a jar of meat babyfood for her and water and let her eat and drink when she wants.
Good luck!

She may have gotten into something that she shouldn't have, pups are notorious for that. I would recommend a trip to the vet, you may want to put in a call to their office and see if they offer an emergency number to seek advice. Good Luck.

She could have eaten something in the yard. Definitely call your vet 1st thing in the am--it's totally abnormal for a pup her age to act that way without something being wrong.

She could of gotten into something outside, or played to hard. But make sure you keep her hydrated..try givnig her some pedialite, it really helps. And make sure she is eating, and if she isnt eating her food, try boiling some hamburger and make some scrambled eggs or rice. Our vet told us to do that for our dog. But good luck
