I'm so very saddened to hear of your loss....I'm sure you were a very caring and loving owner to Lassie....
This is a poem which was written in memory of a pet....
May I go now
Don't you think the time is right?
May I say good-bye to pain-filled days
and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be,
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first.
I fought with all my might!
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.
I want to go! I really do!
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day .
To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and are afraid
because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me.
You know I loved you too.
That's why it's hard to say good-bye
and end this life with you.
So hold me now, just one more time,
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

So sorry! My heart goes out to you. I know what it's like to have a best friend just become too ill or weak to go on. One of the most heartbreaking and worse things in life and truly a hard decision. But the right one I'm sure. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.
Just keep thinking about those wonderful 17 years and all those wonderful memories.
And if you really need it, there are support groups out there. Some people just don't understand this kind of loss, just because a dog isn't "human," but don't let that attitude make you feel that your loss is any less.

I am sorry to hear about your dog, Lassie. It is so hard, dogs are members of the family. I am glad to hear that you had 17 years with her and a good last Christmas. Best wishes.

Its so sad when you lose a much loved pet. They are a part of the family and the feeling of loss is real. Just feel glad that you were lucky enough to share her life with her and able to give her a happy and loving time while she was with you.

That's a very good age for a dog. She must have had a fantastic life with you. It's always sad to have to make that final decision. I've been there and it isn't very nice, even when it's obviously the right choice.
