I have a newly aquired moustache parakeet. Upon taking her to the vet today for her first visit, I was informed she has this condition . This is my first bird so I'm very unsure what to do. The vet recommened culturing the throat and antibiotic therapy. The culture alone is 100.00. Could this be treated just by giving her an antiobiotic without the expensive testing. i love this bird but also am not rich. Does anyone have any knowledge of something like this? Thanks...

I have a male moustache parakeet - they are wonderful birds, and make wonderful pets! Mine even talks a little - among other things, he says "Pretty bird", and "Step up" when he wants you to pick him up.

When I took my bird for his first vet visit I was told he had a problem with his liver, and the only way to definitively determine the problem was to do a biopsy. Instead of opting for the biopsy, which is obviously very invasive and hard on a little bird, my vet recommended that I go ahead and treat him with antibiotics (much less expensive too). Basically, I was told that the antibiotics would hopefully cure the problem, and at the worst they wouldn't do anything. I went with the antibiotics only, and he has been healthy ever since - he is four years old now!

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the ulceration of the choana - is this a life-threating condition? I would talk to the vet some more - what does he/she say about the idea of just giving the antibiotics? You could maybe treat her with those first, and then a little later down the road (after you maybe have a chance to save up a little) get a culture done to ensure the condition has cleared up?
