What does it mean when two customers leave a waitress a good tip but also a dime for each person on the table when they leave?
I know that leaving no tip or a tip and a penny means that the service was poor but what does a dime indicate-that the waitress is cheap?

Leaving the penny or the dime is the insult to the watiress for poor service.Another insult was to take a glass of water, place a penny in the glass, take a saucer and place it on top of the glass of water and invert the glass. When the waitress grabs the glass, water will go everywhere. This was real popular back in the 50's and 60's.My mother was a waitress and told me.

The dime represents you calling someone to help since the service was poor.Back then the pay phones were a dime.

I am not familar with the dimes meaning.

It is common practice, at least in the south. It is a "code" thing between servers. If you were the server, collected your tip, and found a good tip with a single penny it would tell you that you had just served another server and they thought you did a wonderful job.

maybe the fact that the dimes matched the amount of people that were at the table is just a coincidence, and they had extra dimes they wanted to get rid of---hey they left a good tip! Don't read into things too much! :-)

I have never heard of leaving a dime on the table in addition to a good tip. Were the customers Canadian? Canadians are notoriously bad tippers.

I've always heard that leaving a penny means that they did good...thats why i leave waitress/waiters that did a great job a penny.

And whats the big deal if you give them change with the rest of the tip? They should be happy they got a tip because lots of people stif.

I just think maybe their too poor to leave anything, and that's their way of saying they fill bad, and wish they had a couple of bucks to leave, but dont, so a dime is better than nothing at all. smile!! I really wouldn't read into it too much, you know, or it will drive you "NUTZ!!" Everytime you get a tip, of any amount!!! Smile!!!

actual, leaving a tip and a penny potential that the provider exchange into enormously sturdy.. Leaving any variety of "paper" tip alongside with any coin could recommend that the provider is enormously sturdy. In todays Society the value of the coin is the "Scale from a million to ten" , a million being problem-free and ten being astonishing. a minimum of that's what my waitresses tell me.
