Bound's hubby here:
Welcome to the wonderful world of competition shooting!
If you want to shoot competitively, you really need to consider joining either the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) for Trap, National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) for skeet, or the NRA for rifle and/or pistol shooting.
For the ATA, you can join on-line (see link below). For trapshoots, as a member of the ATA, you will be put on mailing lists for major shoots, but you can also shoot registered matches at your local trap range to build your 16 yard and handicapped classifications. The ATA has a publication (I do not remember the name) that identifies local shoots.
For the NSSA, I believe it works the same way, but I do not have personal experience with competitive skeet shooting.
For the NRA, you can shoot competitively at local matches ... building your classification. You can also compete in regional and national matches. The NRA also publishes a journal called Shooting Sports USA, which identifies all of the NRA sanctioned and registered matches, in all shooting disciplines, in the United States. (This can also be found on-line, see link below.)
This is where you need to make some decisions: rifle competition or shotgun competition.
If rifle shooting, will it be smallbore or high power? If it's smallbore, will it be bulls-eye or silhouette? If it's high power, will it be high power (smokeless) or black powder? Will it be bulls-eye or silhouette? Will it be service rifle or will it be match rifle? Will it be short range (to 600 yards) or long range (to 1000 yards)?
If it is shotgun competition, will it be trap or will it be skeet?
Once you decide the type of competition you will enter, you have to get the appropiate equipment. The equipment can be very expensive. Your equipment costs for trap could be about $1000. For skeet, since you shoot four guages (12, 20, 28, 410) about $2000+. For rifle competition, a smallbore rifle and related accessories may cost you $1000 or more. For high power or black powder, an appropiate rifle and accessories will cost you at least $1500 or more.
Then you should consider the cost of the appropiate reloading equipment that will help you shoot better and more often.
Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Check out the local gun shops and gun ranges. They can usually give good info. There are many different types of rifle competitions these days. You didn't mention what you are specifically looking for but you should be able to find three or four position smallbore almost anyplace.
Also check out silhouette shooting with your rifle. There are many different classes for experience levels and equipment. I find it to be more fun that just bullseye shooting.

nrahq.org is the National Rifle Association, The Whittington Center in Raton, NM is their national range. In the US, its just a matter of finding an NRA range(in every state, virtually) or a State Rifle Association range. Here's my 360 site: http://profiles.yahoo.com/canyon-ghost@sbcglobal.net
