The right answer, of course, is that there's no such thing as a soul.
It's an interesting question, though, and I'd like to hear what those who believe in souls AND in evolution think.

I am a theistic evolutionist. I think they were potentially rational beings in the same sense as an embryo in the womb. I believe embryos have souls and I believe proto-humans had souls as well.

That's a good question. I believe that the soul has something to do with the brain. I believe that creatures without brains have some sort of life force, but the soul comes with thought. So to answer your question, they always had souls. That's just my opinion on the matter.
And Ghost Wolf, I actually believe in reincarnation. I believe that souls evolve the same way that life forms evolve.

Check out this website for the Islamic point of view on this subject. It is different from Christian creationism and Darwinian evolutionism.

I'm a creationist, Genesis 2: 7 And God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the MAN CAME TO BE A LIVING SOUL. We do not have souls we are souls,

Why don't you look at an anatomy chart and point to a "soul." Then we can begin to have a discussion.
