The wealthy man who hired da Vinci to paint his wife was named Giocondo. The actual title of what we call "The Mona Lisa" is "La Gioconda" (Da Vinci was Italian). It's kind of a play on words because it is calling the subject by the feminine version of her actual last name, and is also an Italian term meaning "humored," and that is the state in which Mona appears. Just thought I'd offer.

really, no one knows why he painted it. it was the commissioners wife, but there is a lot of controversy behind it. a lot of theorists say it was his way of doing a self-portrait as himself being female. the painting is kind of seperated by the horizon, and different elements that are meant to be the female half and the male half. i think this theory is a stretch they do cleanings of famous paintings, and after one of these cleanings of the mona lisa, they found traces of a veil. which lead them to believe that it was a wedding portrait. prob more info than you needed, but i love art!!!

He was hired/commissioned by the wife of the lady in the portrait, a wealthy Florentine merchant-simple as that!
Hope this helped!
