that the US penal system is absurd??? If it were up to me, I would NOT prosecute anyone for drug use or prostitution....Rape would dealt according to circumstance and the only thing I would focus on would be murder/attempted murder, abuse/weapon attacks and animal abuse etc....but drug abuse and prostitution have made this system largely ineffective. Am I right or am I right?

I do not believe the government has the right to tell you what you can or cannot do to your own body. Drugs and prostitution are not the governments business so long as you do not harm somebody else. The drug war is one of the most expensive scams ever pulled on the taxpayer, and without cause or benefit to anybody but the government.

My response will start with a question and then follow-up;
Are you certain that drug use and prostitution have made the system ineffective, and at what level, Federal or State?

Rape is a form of sex crime, abuse can take many forms, There is white collar crime, blue collar crime, fraud in many forms, graft,
perjury, financial crimes, as well as exploitation, murder, extortion, gang related crimes, arson, the list goes on and can best be described as 'evolving' at the State and Federal level in response to these crimes. Activist's for changes in the law are often the victims, friends, family members. Congressmen and Congresswomen and various other people elected or appointed to Public Service by the voters or the President must address these issues.

You have to admit, it can be difficult and slow going.
Let's also not forget the most current national issue: Illegal Immigration. Placing a significant burden on the American way of life, ie; Our Health System, Equal Employment Oppurtunity, etc.

So, in closing I will say that, Yes, you are the only one. Criminals all profess innocence and will maintain thier innocence while doing the time. With D.N.A. technology cases are being reviewed again while ensuring Due Process to the truly guilt free men and women currently incarcerated.

Largely ineffective? Hardly. Until things like this are legalized, they are still called crimes. Therefore, if someone wants to sell their body, thats a crime. (yes there are victims). You need to take a really close look at our judicial system before making a statement like that. And under what circumstances would you prosecute someone for rape? Do you realize that one of the reasons that women don't report rape is because they feel that nothing will come of it? Or, they will have to be humiliated on the witness stand?
Our legal system isn't perfect by any means, and there are people who think that some judges are too soft. But until someone comes up with a better system, this is what we have to work with. If you think its flawed, then let it become your lifetime ambition to change it.

Sorry, child abuse, sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence all are important to prosecute on, and if we don't prosecute on drug offenses, what happens when someone high gets behind a wheel of a car and winds up killing someone he/she has an accident with. Would you argue that it's murder/manslaughter, or could they argue that it was a drug issue, and not one that can be prosecuted upon?

There are a lot of cross-over crimes where it's virtually impossible due to distinguish what it falls under. Often times drugs and prostitution is only a part of the larger picture.

Luckily its not up to you! I'm sure that there are several people who agree with you - drug dealers, prostitutes, people in prison, etc.

On the other hand, it is up to people like me. I have spent the last 11 years of my life putting people in jail and prison for polluting the streets with drug use, prostitution and all the crimes that surround these lifestyles. I look forward to spending the next 15 or so years continuing to do so.

Without controls on Prostitution - Do you not think many diseases would spread. Prostitution is not a crime of long term prison term. This crime mostly takes up more time with the officer then the actual jail term. Narcotics is an issue. Where do you think junkies get their money for the use of narcotics. they commit every other crime to get the money to purchase the narcotics. How would you suggest we stop all the criminal actions by the drug user.?

I'm glad my cousin went to prison for her drug-use- related crimes... she chose to stay clean in prison, and after she'd done her time, she finished college and has a life, now. For the family members of drug-users, it's a godsend when their loved one ends up behind bars, because the family knows the loved one is safe and not lying in a gutter somewhere dying.

Prostitution... should stay illegal. The only ones who benefit from prostitution are the men who enjoy them and the pimps. Many of the women who make a living that way are former victims of familial molestation... my cousin who did drugs and prison time? Yeah, she prostituted herself, too... got beat up frequently, also. A little jail time for some of them is one or two nights of safe sleep and a meal.

How about instead of complaining about whether these things are legal or not, join with others to try and come up with ideas to help these people free themselves from their predicaments?

I certainly do NOT agree with your view on rape. Have you ever been a victim of rape? There is no "according to circumstance." That is a crime where someone is being violated against their will. As far as drugs go, I would say we might lighten up on those who are busted with a personal amount of marijuana (they can pay a fine, so that they aren't taking up jail space) but we still need to hold those who are trafficking and dealing accountable for their actions.

and.... this is why you are NOT a judge. It takes some very special people to be judges. they have skin as thick as a crocodile!
You are NUTS if you think rape should be based on case by case circumstance. RAPE IS RAPE YOU IDIOT! how would you feel if you had a daughter or a wife and someone raped them? I bet you'd be pissed and you would want to see them in jail!!!!
Personally, I think "drug" arrests should be on a case by case basis. I don't think any joe shmo with a joint should be put in jail. It wastes my time, my money, and my resources (yes, MY because I am a TAX PAYER!! I use my time to work for my money and I use my resources (such as my car and house) to pay taxes as well) However I do think that someone dealing with a meth lab should be sentenced. Rapists should have their penis' cut off (or vaginas sewn shut-- there have been women rapists) thiefs should have their hands cut off and people like oj who repetedly lied in court should have their tongues cut out. Just like in the old days when our criminal justice system was just getting started. Some places (such as russia and japan and sweden still use those standards as means for punishment for crimes!!)

You are correct that people sent to jail for "petty" things have made our criminal justice system inneffective. But, its not the offenders fault our system is ineffective, it is the courts fault!!
