I think it's time to consult your vet about what might be in the best thing to do for your dog. My friend recently had a dog that was very much the same way, and ultimately, they decided to end her suffering and put her to sleep. It's a hard choice to make, but if the dog is in pain, it may be the best thing for her.

Wow! 17yrs. old! That's like 119 yrs. old in doggie yrs.! I know this must be a very special pet. It's so hard to let go when they've been your best friend for so long. But it's also very hard to see your best friend in such pain. First of all, do you have a veterinarian and have you asked their advise? That would be my first step. Then, unfortunately, my 2nd step would be to strongly consider doing the humane thing and having the poor little old lady euphemized. Good luck on your decision.

Your dog could be dealing with any number of issues from arthritis, to gastrointestinal, to neurological, or a combination of those and more.

17 is very old when you consider that most chihuahua's live to about 20 or so under super perfect health conditions.

you may want to consult with your local veterinarian and see if they recommend any type of pain management program until you can decide what might be the next best direction to go.

Best of luck to you and your special friend, it's obvious you care a great deal about him, he's very lucky to have an owner like you!

Poor baby! I would take her to the vet first, before I do anything else, and have her checked and see if there is anything he can do to help her. If there is, that would be great, but regretfully, if not, I really hate saying this, but you may have to put her down, if she's in alot of pain. Also ask the vet, what he thinks the best action would be to take. I'm so sorry about your baby! I really hope everything turns out ok! Good Luck!

I just lost my 15 year old, I know what you mean.Go to Walmart and buy some puppy pads for her to have in the bed.If I thought my girl was in pain, I'd call the vet, he will put her to sleep for you.Mine just slept a lot, had accidents and ate very little. She started walking in circles and had real strange looks on her face before she passed. She just went to sleep.I could not make any decisions for you, but I do wish you the best with her.

A vet can help you deal with the incontinence with medication, but if she's in pain, it's time to think about letting her go. Talk to your vet and get his opinion as to her quality of life, but if it's not there, it's not fair to your dog to keep her, hard as it is for you.

I'm a firm believer in not letting a dog suffer. If your vet thinks he or she can make your pet comfortable at home until the end of her days then go for it. If not I personally would have her euthanized. That is humane to me. Sometimes it's a hard decision to make but in the end I think you'll feel you did the right thing. Best of luck to you.

You probably already know the best answer to your question. Do the kindest thing you will ever do for your dog. Give your heart a chance to catch up with what your mind knows must be done.
I know how hard this is for you. If you'd like to read a poem I wrote when I had to do this for my beloved pekingese, check out my web site and click on the "In Memory" link.

God bless you.

don't try to be heroic and try to keep her going. If she is old and in pain and peeing all over you will be helping her if you let her go. It is for her sake and not your own.

If you can do it, it is the best thing for her. Just hold her firmly and talk to her as the Vet give her the shot.

Sounds like she's had a long and hopefully healthy life til this point. Let her go, she does not need to suffer.

If your chihuahua is 17 yrs old (i have 2 chis: 4 yrs. and l yr), yours has had a long life. If she pees, she'd be very upset at not peeing in the 'right place', plus you think she's in pain.

Do for her what you would want to have done to you: put her out of her misery.
