I remember 2 big instances in my life that meant I was becoming an adult. Number one when I decided I was NOT going to ask for permission to go to the bathroom (what would ones reason be for saying no?) and Number two when I decided I was NOT going to finish everything on my plate or eat things I did not like. Thats when I realized their was no turning back.

When you consciously decide to do what's right, rather than what's in your own best interest, or what might be easier or more fun. When you can think about the consequences of your actions before doing certain things, and decide if it's a good idea or not. When someone tells you something you might not like to hear, you don't blow up in anger and defend yourself, but you try to understand why they might say that, and see their point of view. When you're able to make choices that are going to benefit, rather than harm your future. When you can say no to your friends and risk being an "outcast" if you stand up for what you know is right (or wrong).

When your in tough situations and don't need your mum and dad to help you out such as living on your own and trying to pay bills do taxes go to work everyday whether you feel like it or not and yet some people who are in their late 20s still aren't responsible to do any of those and bludge off other people some 12 year olds are more mature than those people

Its a slow process of changing and growing and realizations. Parties lose their fun because you've realized theres more to life then drinking till you pass out, you have a job that makes enough money to be independent, and you look in the mirror and you actually see a woman or a man looking back at you (which is *really* scary, because it might not be what you imagined)
