They are accepting you into their family..... it's a great honor to be groomed by a kitty.

And they are tasting you - cats use their senses of taste and smell to help identify and remember poeple, places and things... and maybe to see if you are ripe yet... lol.

Our cats view us as very large cats, not people. When your cat "grooms" you, he is is giving you his highest honors. Some cats do this while others don't, as they all have unique personalities and cats have different ways of showing their affection towards us. Many cats will also see their human companion (I hate using the word owner) as the mother cat.
In short, kitty is saying he loves you!

It's a sign of affection and closeness that a kitty wants to groom you like you were one of her own kittens or a cherished friend.

My cat Quarter Pounder used to wait til I just washed my hair and was air drying it to give me a good groom. Jazz hasn't started to do this yet but she will eventually. She gave me some involuntary licks(kisses) today of her own free will.

It is a sign of affection and they are also trying to put their smell on you. some of them also like the taste of hairspray if it is in your hair. I have a cat that is like that.

My cat has the roughest tongue in the world, but if you try to pull away he wraps his paws around you and holds on until he is done! I feel honored (although in pain) that he cares that much about me.

To cats, we are all cats, weird looking, but cats. So they treat us like they do other cats.

You should be flattered... by grooming you, your kitty is saying: "You are part of my tribe and I'm going to look out for you."

Don't think of it as 'cleaning'... it is affection

It could be that they are licking the salty taste off our skin...
