Airlines release different tickets at different stages.

Example.

Qantas flight from Sydney to London on the 31st december.

on the 1st of march, they may release lot D of tickets for economy at $1000

on the 22nd of March, they may release lot E of tickets and it costs $1200

on the 5th of April, they may release lot F of tickets and so on.

I asked that at a travel agent and it makes no difference to seating whatsoever

Q class means the passenger can fly if there is place on the plane. In other words waiting list!

That would be an excursion fare. usually done on tickets when sold as a package. Simply put, its just a reduced fare.
