I have braces, and my gums are swollen terribly! It's mostly the gum between my two front teeth...i bit into an apple one time and it just swelled and stuck out a little! It doesn't hurt, but the rest of my gums are pretty swolen. I brush twice a day, and I admit I can floss more, but braces makes it very annoying and difficult to floss. I will be getting my braces off sometime soon, so I'm worried about looking stupid with an extremely swollen gum between my front teeth! What should I do? Does swishing salt water help?

There are dental rinses you could use, but I wouldn't recommend salt water. You can take Motrin or any ibuprofen tab for the swelling. It is an anti-inflammatory. The bottom line is you HAVE TO floss. That is what is making your gums swollen and red. You should also be brushing at and over the gum line. This will help clean the are at the gum line and prevent or reduce perio disease. Finally, let your dentist know what's happening. He may suggest another treatment as well.

salt-water will reduce the swelling but you should go the dentist because you may have an infection.
