Yes, its true that he is one of the spiritual leaders of muslims and his appearance is one of the signs of the 'Qayama' the Last Day. It is said that muslims will become very weak in faith crime, vulgarity, unjustice etc will be at peak and there will be no one to stand against these evils. So Imam Mehdi will appear and then gather a group of people in Kaaba and then will make wake up the muslims.
After that Jesus will come to earth again and that day no one can claim to be christian, as the concepts like Trinity, Criscifiction etc will be no more a belief.

in The Lord of the Ring the (Mahdi). was represented as Eregon .( not the eye of Mordor).. because Eregon helped Gandave when he returned as Gandav the White( Gandave represents Jesus). (Gandave fell from the Cliff when he was Fighting the demon(Satan) he was called Gandave the Gray)
THE MAHDI.. is a person in the Islamic religion that will come to unite all the muslimes together at the end of time when all the peoples belief has weekend.. It depends on who are you asking ? the Mahdi has double meanings, to Muslims who are Sunnis he is a person ( a leader) that will come as a sign from God for the the beginning of Judgment day, he and Jesus will reunite people and retrieve Jerusalem..
And to Shiite Mahdi is the 12 Imam..
Check this to see the difference:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahdi

The Mahdi (or Mehdi), in Islamic eschatology, is a man who will come at the end of the times. In a Hadith upon whose authenticity all Muslims agree, the Holy Prophet has said: "Even if the entire duration of the world's existence has already beenexhausted and only one day is left before Doomsday (Day of judgment),Allah will expand that day to such a length of time, as to accommodate the kingdom of a person out of my Ahlul-Bayt who will be called by myname.

Imam Mahdi (A.f) is the 12th Imam. He is considered to come back when the world gets to the final point of corruption and make everything right again with the help of Jesus (Pbuh).
Ask me personally if you want more info.
