The standard treatment of fleas for cats does in fact not include mayonnaise.
While I'm not practiced in human conditions, I am in animal treatment/care.
Your best bet is to at least go to PetSmart or PetCo, and get Advantage or Frontline for your cat and apply it on their skin (under their fur) in between their shoulder blades.
After about 10 or so days, you should see some results.
If not, you may want to take your cat to the vet and make sure that she doesn't have a more serious parasite condition that could be treated differently.
Hope this helps!
Best of luck to you and your cat!

I wouldn't give the cat medicine, he's not sick, just has some fleas.
Get some flea powder, you're going to need it if the fleas have colonized on your rugs. Otherwise, what usually works best is a spray you use on the cats fur that kills them. Flea collars don't work, they're too weak. Try and get a spray at any pet store. My cats have no issues with it, neither does my dog.
To prevent this later on, make sure they don't get outside. Cats usually get fleas from being outside. I know mine always bolt out the door whenever I open it, it's their curiosity (drives them crazy, same reason they want to go into the rooms with the closed doors)
Good luck

First, stop allowing your cat to go outside. Secondly, you can buy an over the counter shampoo and wash your cat, be sure not to get it on his head. You put a thick ring of shampoo around the neck, then shampoo the rest of the cat. This will keep the fleas from running in to the cats ears and eyes. Shampoo the cat well, then submerge in water from neck down and pick off any fleas you can catch. You will need to vaccume your house as often as possibe, especially under the furniture for the next few weeks. If you are still having problems with fleas then I would reccommend speaking to your vet about a stronger medication.

i've never heard of using mayo. if your cat will allow you to wash he or she you can use lemon joy dish washing liquid. it will kill the fleas. don't use over the counter med.(shampoo, collars, or the stuff you put behind their necks) my mom used that stuff and had to take her cat to the vet because he got blood poisoning from it. vet bill was around 400.00. so go to the vet and get frontline or advantage. the vet said over the counter flea stuff was the main killer of their animals!!!!!

I wouldn't try the Hellman's thing, just go with the usual pet store or vet flea treatment.... only put things on the cat you know are safe....

I think they are lying. Go get frontline for the pets asap. They will get worms from the fleas larvae.
