Out of all the cities I've visited in England (quite a lot of them) - London is still my favorite. :-)

York's liable to be the best option, as it's a fairly quiet city, has a great sense of history, and has excellent transport... with a HUGE railway station which is pretty central to the rest of the country with links to both the East Coast Mainline (London to Edinburgh) + the West Coast Mainline (London to Glasgow, via Manchester)..... and also well served with buses from FIRSTgroup + Yorkshire Coastliner (Yorkshire Coastliner is one of the best operators in the country).

The Yorkshire Coastliner Buses travel from Leeds, through York, then on towards Yorkshire seaside resorts including Whitby, Scarborough, Filey & Bridlington (takes within a couple of hours) http://www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk

The coastliner route to Whitby (service 840 + X40) also takes in
- Flamingoland Theme Park & Zoo
http://www.flamingoland.co.uk

- Pickering, administrative base for the North Yorkshire Moors railway... one of the country's leading preserved steam & diesel locomotive railways (about 18miles through jaw dropping scenery) http://www.nymr.demon.co.uk

- Thornton Dale....... one of the prettiest villages in England

- Goathland..... a pretty village in the middle of nowhere, and includes one of the Stations along the NYMR, and was used as HOGSMEADE Station in the first 2 Harry Potter movies

Back to York............. another advantage is there's free fishing in the City centre........ don't need any additional permits or club memberships, all you need is a rod license issued by the enviroment agency (though the rivers are mainly filled with Coarse fish, and there's an unwritten rule that they're catch & release only). you can even see the fish swimming about in some places during the summer when the water is clear.

As for Manchester & Liverpool.......... they're liable to be far noisier, since both cities have 2 football (soccer) teams in the top leagues (Liverpool, Everton/Everscum, Scumchester United + Manchester City)........ both former industrial cities undergoing / undergone regeneration, and Liverpool has a reputation for being a crime hotspot (possibly even worse than New York used to be).

You'll hate Manchester if you hate Political Correctness, as the Council + Police there get mentioned rather alot at both http://www.capc.co.uk (Campaign Against Political Correctness) + http://www.politicallyincorrect.me.uk

some homes contained in the U.S. initiate as low as $seventy 5,000 yet they honestly initiate scaling up relying on the city you intend to stay in. so as that a lot would not suffice to purchase a house. however, i'm able to reassure you that fifty grand might want to be better than adequate to a minimum of cement better than 6 months nicely worth of employ in case you've been nonetheless waiting on your job to kick in. you'd be ok :) Groceries, and different issues are somewhat low value in Austin. solid success! Austin is an recommendations-blowing city.

Before you pick a city, you should inquire into the immigration requirements. As a social democracy, the UK is not interested in someone else on their dole. But if you can get in, move to Manchester.

I reckon Bristol must be favourite. There is a vibrant night/social life, and you are close to some great unspoilt countryside.

I used to live near Manchester, and found it wet, with ill-mannered locals.

Liverpool is the crime capital of Britain, and the people seem to have a chip on their shoulder.

York is a nice place, but the people are tightfisted and as subtle as a car crash.
