make a list of interesting things about you or things you've experienced. such as sports that you play, the last school you went to, what you want to do with your life (career only... don't talk about marriage), places you've traveled to, concerts you've seen...... so, when the other person says anything that could possibly lead to one of your anecdotes, you take it away. so, if they say, "i love this song," you can answer with the time you to a whatever concert. then, this will lead to one of their stories, and the next thing you know it's 3 hours later.

ahh, the art of conversation. The easiest way to start a conversation is to find something that the other person is passionate about. Sports, music, politics, religion will surely get the blood boiling. If you touch the right nerve( the right subject matter) you'll spend hours just trying to shut them up. You need to do some observation of your interest to see what turns him on or what interests him. Does he have any magazine subscriptions?! Does he have any posters on his wall?
Most people have a public face that they put on when they are out. To really get to them, you have to do or say something that gets them to drop the pubic face and just react. Asking about the time or weather will get a blanket response. Saying something off the wall will cause them to react. Asking him if you look pregnant will surely get him to ask you to repeat your question particularly if he isn't expecting something like that from you. People watching can be a good subject matter, but it can backfire if the person you watch is his cousin or best friend. of course, if it's someone whom he cannot stand, then he may find solace in someone who shares his same disdain for someone.
Taking the high road is always advised though, so look for his interests or area of expertise and ask him for help. If he plays guitar, ask him for lessons, if he plays football, ask him to...no don't go there...nothing is more annoying than going to a game with someone who doesn't know the rules or who to play. If you ask questions at the most inappropriate times, you'll become annoying to him and everyone around you. Do some homework and study ahead so you don't come off as too ignorant. Some knowledge could go a long way.

You should talk about things that get you excited and that you really enjoy, then the enthusiasm should carry the conversation.
