Well yes and no. 1/4 mile drag racer cars are almost always automatic. But the torque converter is a stall converter and they have "shift kits" in them for almost 0 slippage. If the automatic is built right it will over take a stick car of the same model and engine power. Sticks no matter how fast the driver gets the clutch in shifts and gets the petal backup its not as fast as a modified race automatic trans is. The over 300 MPH 1/4 mile funny cars do use clutches and more than one and the kinda shift automatically. SO in the end automatics are faster. But in regular production cars the sticks are faster. I convert my old BMW 4hp22 transmissions to a 3500 stall and an equivalent to a stage 3 shift kit and its 1.6 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile than my stick cars of the same model and year. Oh and yes some very recent cars with automatics are faster than their twin sister sticks. Like the new Porch transmissions. Lets just sit back and see how well they last.

On a dyno, assuming that you put the exact same engine in front of a 5 speed and dyno it and then put the automatic behind THE SAME engine, the 5 speed will show better results on a dyno. Without going into a winded explanation, the automatic has a torque converter that will be the main cause of a greater percentage of loss of power through the drive train. This does not mean that a 5 speed will always be "faster" than an automatic by any means

A manual stick shift gives you more control of gears and therefore will give you (with practice of course) a better and faster start. But some of the newer automatic transmissions and the smart cvt transmissions (learn your driving habits) could get right close.

Depends on the driver, but, traditionally speaking, a "stick" will always be faster, unless the driver really sucks at shifting.
What's an automatic stick shift?
Lets see. Audi / VW tiptronic would be one example.
Corvette paddle shift auto-manual would be another.
If you don't know, you shouldn't be answering.
