There are several breeds of dogs that have gained an unfair reputation. Granted, some characteristics are more dominant in different breeds (labs tend to be known for being friendly and playful, yorkies-intelligence, jack russels-active, german shepherds-loyal and protective, etc...). However, most dogs develop these traits in the way they are raised and treated, not just on their breeding. Because of what certain breeds have been trained for (german shepherds for police dogs, doberman pinchers for guard dogs, pit bulls for fighting), the reputation for the breed is based on the commonly known use for the breed, which is very unfair.
If we start outlawing breeds of dogs, then we get into a whole other area, bringing in more "watchdog" government control into our lives. Do we really want that? What we need is to quit depending on the government to create a law for everything and become more responsible citizens and learn to handle our lives and situations instead of running to "daddy" (Big Brother), and crying "fix it for me". Outlawing of breeds won't stop with just one breed, it will be open to all sooner or later.
Actually, some insurance companies refuse to issue homeowner's policies to people who own certain breeds of dogs (German Shephers, Doberman Pinchers, Chow Chows, Pit Bulls, and others). This is very unfair to owners of these breeds. One could cry discrimination.
Now, I feel sorry for the innocent people, especially children, that suffer attacts by improperly trained or supervised dogs, just like I feel sorry for the innocent people killed on our highways by negligent drivers.
As was said before.... and I totally agree...
Punish the deed, not the breed

The bloke who posted this question is a champion.
This dangerous unpredictable breed and others like it shuold be SHOT ON THE SPOT ALL OF THEM
Im sick of all these hard core wankers backing the dogs as being loving pets ohhh there so caring **** that **** for a joke kill the dog and lock the owner up why would some one want such a vicious dog any way. Training them helps but not fully their still unpredictable and vicious is in theis blood lines their a fighting dog at heart THE WORD TRAINING HAS A MEANING CHUCK THE ****ING DOG IN FRONT OF A TRAIN.
ive got an idea dont feed the dog for a week and chuck the ****ing dog in a cage with the owners lets see how long they think there so loving and caring for then!!!!!!!!!

It is not the breed it is the stupid owners that do not train and socialize their dogs properly. If we start outlawing breeds the people that keep vicious dogs will only move on to another breed and then we will have to outlaw that breed and when does it end. It will end with all breeds being outlawed and no dogs as pets for anyone. We need to start severely punishing the owners that chose to keep aggressive and/or vicious dogs.

I would hate to see Pits dissappear off the face of the earth. However, too many people have proven that they are irresponsible with them and that this is a dog that CANNOT be handled by most. At what point do we say "enough is enough"?
Mominohio....great point, but it will NEVER happen!
In a perfect world we could stop murder, rape, kidnapping and drugs too.

ANY dog that is traind to kill will. If the dog is raised right then it will be a good dog. Just as good as a lab or golden. If you treated even the sweetest little puppy in the world like most treat pits they will become the most vicouse!!!!
Punish the deed NOT the breed!!!!!!!!!!!

That's just awful owners should take full responsibility for their animals. I myself witnessed a 4 year old boy get attacked by a Rottweiler....and he had to get 400 stitches, and is now scared to death of any dog.

I had a chow that attacked a neighbor girl about 12 years ago, the girl was playing around with my son outside and playfully slapped his arm, the dog, about 70 pounds jumped her and she ended up with over 50 stiches, it took all of my strength to get this dog off of her, the dog got me by the ankle, and realized it was me, let go, I told the girl to WALK back to the house, she ran, the dog got her AGAIN, and I had to pull her off of her again, this time my son escorted her inside. I WILL NEVER, EVER, forget that as long as I live, and therefore, I will NEVER trust another dog again. This dog we had had from a pup, NEVER taught it to fight at all, and it was never around any other dogs either........

AS long as pit bulls are trained properly and treated well and not allowed to run free, there is no harm in them.

It isn't the breed it is the breed line. If you breed aggressive dogs their puppies are very likely to be aggressive themselves. If idiots would stop breeding animals for fighting then we wouldn't have this problem
