About a month ago, a small dark spot appeared out of nowhere on the gum tissue located in between two of my bottom teeth. The mark takes up the surface area of the very tip of my bottom gum tissue (the part that looks like a triangle). Now, it is a little darker, and the tissue feels hard, almost as though it were dead tissue. Does anybody know what this could be, and why this would happen? My teeth are well taken care of, and are in great shape. I have never had any tooth problems other than cavities, although I do have sensitivity near the gums in some of my other teeth, but my dentist at the time (I have no dental care at the moment) said it wasn't a major problem. I brush my teeth twice a day (sometimes more) but I don't floss as often as I should. Could this have something to do with it? If you are a dentist, your expert opinion is greatly appreciated. If you aren't a dentist, your suggestions are appreciated as well.....Last question: Has this happened to anyone else?

I believe you are referring to the embrasure area, the triangle in between the teeth. A "sudden" dark spot is strange and something to be concern with, but let's not go jumping to conclusions.

It sounds like you have bruised the tissue, or traumatized it somehow. I would think due to flossing incorrectly, but you said you didn't floss often.

If your teeth are well taken care, then decay isn't an issue, even decay wouldn't effect the tissue that way. I'm thinking you have bumped or hit the tissue at the embrasure area with something, maybe even the toothbrush and just bruised it.

Try flossing just to see if maybe something is stuck under the tissue. I would pay close attention to brushing, making sure if it's sore, that you aren't keeping it traumatized by bumping it when you brush or floss.

Or it could very well be just a blood vessel close to the surface of the tissue, this is very common. This pigmentation of the tissue is also a hereditary trait found mostly in African American and American Indians.

Do make an appointment with your dentist, it's probably nothing, but it is something that should be checked out. It's better to be safe than sorry, and I'm sure knowing will take a huge weight off your shoulders. Hope I've been of some help to you. Good luck!

please seek attention from a dentist and from a skin doctor -- you might have a form of oral cancer, but don't panic until you get their results
