well I never made a huge grin but I found that if you do give a little smile you look more relaxed and like your not having to kill yourself to make your horse behave which makes you look better as a rider in my opinion

It doesn't hurt to smile during horse shows, especially in hunters, pleasure classes, and in dressage. If you smile in dressage though, make it faint and not a huge grin, dressage is suppossed to be serious. For the hunters or pleasure classes riding and being with you horse is suppossed to be joyful so smile away to show how much fun you're having.

I have shown horses at national competition and it gives you extra points to smile and it doesn't hurt to smile. You never know when you are going to be on camera!! It will make people think that you are here to have fun not participating for the cash only.

I judge begginer shows and we do deduct marks from riders who do not look like they are having fun, smiling relaxes you and does this for you.

yes it does matter....it draws the judges attention off the other competitors and onto you.
