"But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife. His attention is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is concerned about the Lord's things so that she may be holy in body and in spirit. But the married woman is concerned about earthly things, about how she can please her husband." 1 Cor. 7:32-34

Nuns, Sisters, Religious Priests, Monks and Brothers all belong to Religious Communities and take a vow of Celibacy. They do this freely and with great love of God. They also take vows of poverty and obedience.
Diocesan Priests do not belong to religious communities. They do not take a vow of poverty. They do take a vow of obedience to their Bishop and a vow of celibacy not to marry.
The first Pope was married and probably most of the apostles.
For the first 1500 years there were married priest. The law came into effect over the ownership of the land the Priest's Churches were on. When the Priest died or moved on, the land was sold and the Church was lost to the parishioners.

i be responsive to that Jesus talked to the 1st priests approximately being eunuchs for the sake of the dominion of heaven and there have been issues getting married priests to try this. simply by fact the 11th century entire celibacy has been the norm as a disciplinary rule and married priests require particular permission to alter into priests. Paul pronounced married human beings worrying with their marital themes and celibate human beings being waiting to commit themselves to serving God and there is the Bride and Bridegroom imagery regarding the Church interior the Bible. So sometime from the 11th Century they in all danger placed all of it jointly and did the hoop element.

I think God intended for all man to find a mate or get married. But staying unmarried lets you focus entirely on god and not so much on other things like sex and bills. When you become a preist or a nun you take a vow not to become married, or preoccupied with anything other than gods work. For them getting married it would be breaking the ties that they made with god.

Married people will naturally be concerned with their spouses and their children, so their attention is divided between their family and God's work. People without the ties of spouses and families can give themselves totally to God's work.

I'm married with 2 kids, and would like to do some missionary work, but haven't because I need to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. If I were single, I'd just be able to go.

It is better for everyone to not marry for these reasons. But if one cannot control their lustful desires it is better to marry. If a priest or a nun decide to devote their live to Christ and not marry that is their choice. However, I don't think it should have to be necessary to become a priest.
Nuns are more like female monks, so I guess, they shouldnt have sex, because their husbands would probably be discouraged with them living at a convent =)

I was a married priest (in the Orthodox Church) for eight years.

It has pluses and minuses. The minuses are what you (and Paul) identify. It's tough to balance the 24/7 reality of priesthood with family obligations, especially if you're trying to be an enlightened father who helps with the house and the kids.

But the pluses are huge. You have a support to your ministry that you wouldn't have as a celibate. It gives incredible strength. You have your wife's wisdom to help you. And you have an insight into the family struggles of your people that you couldn't possibly have as a celibate.

I'd say, on balance, that in today's world, a married priesthood is preferable.

I think if God wanted Priests and Nuns to get married he'd tell us.

The above verse implys that if people are content in serving the Lord without giving into lust then it is better if they do not marry. If they will be troubled with lustful thoughts then it is better to marry. The bible has left it up to the person to decide.

You act as if the Bible is more important than God.

If God truly does not want priests and nuns to merry, he apparently does not hold them so accountable for their (priests, mostly) atrocities against small children. Is such a God worth worship? That's not the God I know and love.

It's just a perfect analogy setting I can use. You wouldn't marry a homicidal maniac because they believe in killing people. Same thing, except it a belief in a fake idea.
