I'm sorry that you're having a tough time sleeping! I know how frustrating it can be to be tired all day long, and then get to your cozy bed--and not be able to fall asleep!

Have you tried listening to soft music, like sounds of the ocean? That can sometimes help.

Sometimes I'll "trick" my body into falling asleep by creating "dreams" while I'm still awake. I'll think about being in a hot air balloon, drifting up and away. No pressure on falling asleep, just imagery.

Other times, I try a hot cup of milk with honey.

An hour before bed I try to relax and calm my mind. Even though I may not be stressed, I make this time special for me, and I'll listen to music or read, or type Yahoo! Answers!

If all else fails, see if a doctor can prescribe something such as Ambien CR or Lunesta. I had to quit the Ambien because it made me sleep walk too much. Lunesta works wonders for me though. I have had terriffic luck.

Natural medicines such as Melatonin and Valarien did not work for me, but they do work for others.

Good luck to you, and I hope it helps.

Oh, by the way, you might want to consider seeing a doctor if you are on insurance. Insomnia can be a symptom of a more serious disorder.

Don't do the medicine thing, you'll just get dependent on it. Try things like a couple of slow drinks in the evening to relax you. Everybody suffers from insomnia at some point, but the best medicines are the ones you use often. Don't go to bed too early, unless you really do feel tired, if you try too hard you'll never conquer it. Sit up, even till say 3AM if need be, SLOWLY drinking, NO BEER AND NO RED BULL, then potter to bed expecting not to get too much sleep. You'll probably get to sleep more quickly than you expect, then repeat this but try to bring your sleep pattern back, so go to bed say 10 minutes earlier each night. Don't use the booze every night either or you'll just get to need that to help you sleep, after a few day's you'll probably get back to a relatively normal sleep pattern if my experience of it is anything to go by.

You can try

diphyenhydramine: in all the OTC sleep aids, antihistamine
cold meds, trade name of Benadryl in the US. In the nighttime cold meds. Combined with alcohol in the liquid nightime cold meds, it knocks you right out. But::!!! it is habituating. Bad stuff to take every day. You will feel groggy
the next day. Only use once in a while, if absolutely necessary.

presript sleep aids. OK, but not in the long term.

so,

Force yourself to get up a couple of hours early each morning.
Get two hours of intense exercise each day. What is intense depends upon the person. Try to get the exercise in early in
the day so you will have time to relax before sleep time.
Eat a good dinner early in the evening. Have a bath/shower
before bedtime and a light snack. Turn off all sounds and
read a calm book in bed until sleepy. If that doesn't work,
just read the rest of the book. Keep the radio and the TV off.
Avoid caffeine (tea, coffee, sodas) after mid morning.

Im also 22, cant get to sleep very well, sometimes i lay till about 4 in the morning in bed and can't get off.

What i have been doing recently is putting ITV play on and watching that crap, it bores you to sleep, remember to set sleep timer. Dont eat sugar rich foods for a couple of hours before bed time,

Melatonin is a natural herbal supplement that you can get at any over the counter drug store. Taken in small doses it helps people to fall asleep. Like with anything it takes about 30 min to get into your system, and make sure you can donate 6 to 8 hrs to sleep. Good luck

have had insomnia for years and got hooked on Halcyon and finally got myself off of it but it was very unpleasant.

Go to your dr. as something causes it-even changes in brain chemestry. If you get prescription medication for insomnia, ask that your dr. prescribe only a couple weeks supply, not a month as I tried Ambience, Lunestra, the whole bunch of new drugs and they did not phase me.They are all expensive and if they do not work, you are stuck with a bunch of unused pills!

I go up to 3 nights without so much as dozing off-am so wide-awake I go clean cupboards, write letters, read, etc. and yet I am not woozy, groggy, unfunctional the rest of the day.! It can only be God's grace! Now I am getting 3-5 hrs. sleep off and on a night, mostly from 7 to 10 a.m. on. Being retired I can sleep in which isn't possible for everyone.

I pray you find something that helps. If you take prescription drugs, they warn not to stop them suddenly or without supervision. Praying you get your zzzzzzz's

Dear Sleepless!,I have suffered your problem for twenty five yrsnow, the best drug&strongest available ,will have to be prescribed by a Dr. It is called ''SECONAL/SECOBARBITAL 100MG,take one at bed time, you mentioned theU.K.,the drug is no longer available in Canada,I have the drug custom compounded .The drug companies in Canada, stopped producing this pill due to lack of use among the masses, maybe one in two hundred use it. This drug works great for me!,but can be DEADLY if abused,100mg at nite should knock you out cold ![for about 2-4 hrs ]I have a very high tollerance to it and can take ,3-400mg,per day !!.When used properly, its great ,but also very effective, should you want to O.D. pls be carefull with seconal, use caution if drinking, this combination was taken by actress Marilyn Monroe, and caused her death.Onepill at night,=sound sleep and refreshed the next morning.Good Luck!!! I use Nytol when I really cant sleep, but you cant use it for any longer than 10 days.
Use that, and get yourself into a bedtime routine, hot bath, milky drink, no alcohol or anything that stimulates your brain for a couple of hours before bed time.
If this does not help maybe its time to see your GP.

Go to your doctor who will check your general health as it could be an underlying medical condition that is causing your sleeplessness.

For example, blocked nasal packages was causing my friend difficulties and steam inhalation (filling a basin with boiling hot water and putting a towel over your head) at least an hour before bedtime seemed to help.
