I believe there are situations where the Bible could be taught in public schools. The Bible as literature is a great example, or talking about the Bible in a World Religions course alongside other religious texts would also be appropriate. The teachings of the Bible should not be taught in a public school, however.

For a hundred years or so in the USA the Bible WAS used in schools as the reading book and the book on sociology and morals.
That isn't why God gave us the Bible, but it did have an effect on those who read it.
There were no shootings in school, few girls got pregnant, few babies were killed by abortion, teachers were respected, students learned to take responsibility.....and many other things..
Today, without any mention of the Bible, things have changed.

It is the best-selling book in the world, one of the greatest works of literature, and a pillar of our civilization. Like it or not, these facts are absolutely true. It's absolutely ridiculous, to my thinking, that secular education has refused it entry for any reason. A particular bias against religion is not sufficient to deny a work that has has such an enormous impact upon the world. By denying students exposure we do them a grave disservice.

Well there are some semi-historical parts of the bible, as well as some general "good" things ("Love your neighbour as yourself" can't go wrong with anyone)..
But getting down to it I think it's wrong. The Bible connotes a certain religion, and excludes others if we study it in public schools.

Dear Cliff,
When this country was very young, children were taught how to read using the Bible. This was part of the curriculum in public schools.

If it were used in a comparative religion class, students would understand that Buddha said many of the same things Jesus did. Only Buddha said them 500 years earlier.
Kind of makes you wonder were Jesus was for those 30 missing years. We know that the Roman Empire was trading goods with Asia...maybe religion too.

I believe that students and teachers should be allowed to bring their bibles into school and be allowed to read them when they have free time. WHo are they hurting if they silently read their bible. They should be allowed to pray without being reprimanded too. Our country was founded on Christianity and the Bible is a big part of that, but people today like to pretend it wasn't bc if they had to admit that it was, they would also have to admit that their lifestyles today are horrendous.

No. not in public schools. There are too many religions to account for and some aren't even affiliated or religious. This is what private schools are for.
however, I am not in objection to the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. That is one instance, and does not dictate a particular religion...and each has it's God or God's.
