I bought a hoover (pipe pull along) from Tool station called "Power Plus" which is designed for a workman/contractor but is really good in the home as it out sucks my Vax and my mums Dyson.
Its wet n dry and has an intigrated power socket built in the hoover so you can plug things into it as use it as a power supply PLUS you can connect power tools through it like a drill or sander and it will automatically turn on and off when the power tool does to suck all the dust etc straight in so good for the DIYer.

Take a look at the one designed by Vivian on 'The Young ones', that even sucked up the floorboards!!!!!! Maybe a bit over-the-top and not the best for cleaning your house but it provided the best laughs so for that I think it should win!!!

Miele is the best - and not a stand up one, but one with a long handle...the older model - works best for getting in the corners..under beds..etc
