The celibate clergy did not come into full bloom until about 1000 A.D. There were many married priests, bishops, and popes before this time.
First, Judeo-Christian tradition has always held that single people be celibate. This is taught by Judaism and Christianity from before the Scriptures were written down.
The question should be: Why can't priests marry?
This idea of a celibate clergy came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.
The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). For example, Yahweh ordered the prophet Jeremiah not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus did not marry.
John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.
The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).
The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.
A priest is "married" to the Church. Some people think that a priest who takes his duties seriously cannot take proper care of a wife and family. "A man cannot serve two masters."
With love in Christ.

All priests ARE MARRIED TO THE CHURCH.
You are asking this to people who live in the flesh and are caught up in the world. What kind of answer did you expect other than people giving their opinions based on a total and complete ignorance of the gospel? Most of the people who are responding are probably not even Catholics.
The gospel isn't about me and my opinion, it's about Him and His will.
Jesus and Saint Paul were both celibate, and they both preached that it's better if someone can be celibate so that they can serve God and His Church without a conflict of interest. Priestly celibacy is modeled after this example.
Just the fact that you ask this question indicates that you don't think that priests should be celibate, but I don't see how this affects your life to try to impose your way of thinking on others who want to serve God the best way that they can.
Why did you single out Catholic priests? Buddhist monks are celibate, too. The fact that you singled out a group to with a generalized question shows bigotry against the Catholic Church.
I know you aren't going to pick this answer, but so what. I can just as easily ask a question and then pick the answer that agrees with me, but would I be learning anything new from that?

To become a priest is a choice , taken with full knowledge of the restrictions and obligations the post demands; the persons who take this choice voluntarily agree to abide by the rules set out. They are not forced not to marry, but agree not to do so. Hence if the church feels that celibacy is necessary for priests as it does, then no one can question it, as it is by the priests own choice they obey. The church has several reasons for enforcing these restrictions. Historically the church disallowed marriage in the clergy , to check corruption as at one time it was very common for priests to transfer church property to their children.
These days celibacy is looked more as a sacrifice, and an act of self restraint and control.
Child molestation, it would be safe to say didn't take place because these "priests" chose to be "celibate". Choosing to molest children over matrimony, does defy celibacy. It also doesn't make sense that these priests would restrict themselves for celibacy sake to the extent that they would rather do something even worse in the eyes of everyone including themselves and the church.

Diocesan Priest - yes. Those who belong to Religious Communities like the Franciscans or Jesuits- No.
The first Pope, Peter, was married. Jesus cured Peter's mother - in - law. For over 1500 years there were married Catholic priests. The priests lost the right to marriage over property rights. The Priests owned the land the Church was on. When the Priests died, the land (and Church) was sometimes sold. In order to stop this, the law came into effect. This enables the parishioners not to be afraid of loosing their Church every time a priest dies or moves on.

If God did require not the prophets to remain single to spread the gospel to the world, does the church know better than the Lord?
1 Corinthians 7:1-9
1 Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry. 2 But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7 I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. 8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
If I remember correctly was not some of apostles married and doing work of Jesus at the same time? I think if the issue of marriage is the land once the priest dies, it should remain property of the church ,but the widow should be allowed to leave their until she dies.

Yes, the only reason why they forbid them to marry was so that the children of priests wouldn't inherit church land or money. I know lots of married men, including my husband, my father, and others who would make great priests. I also think they should let women be priests.

This question is similar to "Should married men be allowed to cheat on their wives?"
Catholic men accept a vow of chastity when they decide to become priests. If a man does not want to be celibate, he does not become a priest.

If the Catholic priests were allowed to marry there would be less scandals related to child molestation and gay incidents in the Roman Church. Non-monastic Orthodox priests, for instance, have always been allowed to marry. They actually have been required to be married prior to ordination. The result: no scandals in the Orthodox Church related to child molestation or gay priests.

Yes without a doubt. Priests are not forbidden to marry for religious reasons. It was instituted as a cost saving measure hundreds of years ago.
