I got out way back during the Vietnam war. Couldn`t get a job missed the good people. After a year I went down to the Army recruiter and they had a freeze on prior service so I couldn`t get back in. A few months later I could get in but lost 2 grades E5 to E3. I got them back in just a few months because of my old time in service promoted me before everyone else. I`m sure its the same today and the Bennys are great for your family.
I went 25 years and didn`t intend to, it just happened. Retirement as it turned out was great!!!

You wouldn't be on basic pay. If you've served in any of the forces for 3 years or more, you retain the pay that you left on and start as a higher rank than the other recruits. A lass did that when I was a recruit. She had been in the TA for 4 years and joined the RAF as an LAC (one above AC (bottom level private)) with higher wages than the rest of us. You'd have to put up with all of the BS of basic training and the lack of privileges of your new rank though.
(I may be wrong with the pay thing, that's what it was like 6 years ago)
It's great to see someone who loves what they do/did! There are too many mercenaries in the military now.
Good luck mate, I wish you all the best either way!

Remember, you don't just get basic pay. You get BAH, BAS, full health care, and lots of other stuff. How long were you out for? What was your old rank? You may lose a bit of rank, but if you were EOD, or a Combat Engineer, their points are pretty low right now for promotions, and all your points you had before you got out will still apply. If you want to come back in, I would say do it. It is ultimately your decision, just be aware that the deploying rate is very high right now compared to when you were in.

wow, for all the people who want to answer but are inexperienced or just straight talking out their a*ses... learn how to do research. Too old? He's "nearly 26" not even close to being too old to do anything in the military...
the AF is not accepting prior service. Good luck trying to get in.
If you were an E-5 or above, you wil need a grade determination waiver. If you were combat arms, promotion is good right now.

The USN or USAF is a good choice, because it's safer. Unless Carriers and battleships can move on land.
When were you enlisted? A year ago, two years ago? What were you an E-3?
You do know if you goto college, which is expensive an about 3-4 years you can become a Officer, starting pay is about 2,400$ without Food allowance an other benefits.

If you want to go back in, go for it. You can't have been out for very long if you're 26 and were in for 7 years. You won't be living on basic pay. You'll live on basic pay plus BAH plus BAS.

See your local recruiter. Depending on the branch of service and MOS, you may end up with a promotion... But you may end up deploying right away. You will not go through boot camp again, rather a refresher type of training, talk to a recruiter, you might be pleasantly suprised.

Talk to a recruiter. You probably have a RE-1 on your DD 214 so the recruiters will treat you like royalty.
One of the hardest things about the transition to civilian life is just how meaningless they things you do are.
