Seeing as how 95% of people describe themselves as believers in some sort of deity to some varyinfg degree, let me tell you that being an atheist is not about becoming popular. The very notion is absurd. Many atheist have family memebers who have turned their backs on them for an absence of belief in some deity or the other. The funny thing is that the bible itself tells it believers to love your fellow man before you love god because you will never see god, but you see your fellow man everyday.
Many of us would not discuss our views so openly if it were not for the anonymity the internet offers.
The way I see it, atheism for me is a stedfast commitment to the truth. Regardless of the consequences, I can only bear witness to something that i have witnessed. In order to believe in a deity, I must have some way of reconciling that belief with the senses I use for perception. to this day, I have not seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled any deity. If I had, I would have something to base my belief on. People who claim to have had some sort of experience like this, I have to conclude that they are either lying to me or delusional.

Why would you believe in something just to make yourself feel better? I'd rather know the truth about the world than have a false sense of security.

Its about a personal choice, and let me tell you it us not popular.
Mostly it is about living your own life, one where your oppinions and decisions are made by you rather than an organisation you have no say in, and that things are in your own hands, to make yourself happy and go after your own goals.

It's "about" being without belief in the existence of gods. That's it.
Whatever other "purpose" I may feel my life has, that's up to me to decide. Atheism is nothing more than an absence of belief in deities. Everything else is left up to the individual.
