Why are my gums dark?

I think you can consult a cosmetic dentist and have them bleached but they're dark due to your genetics. For an average person they can become darker due to smoking and drinking drinks such as soda, coffee and tea but cannot be naturally lightened if that is how they are naturally.

Usually because you have not been brushing them properly or not at all. It's important to have healthy pink gums so that way your teeth stay in place. When you gums are red, dark and sore you might have Gingivitis. It's not serious at all, and can be easily treated. First, when you brush, brush the w ay your teeth grow. Bottom teeth, brush up, Top teeth brush down. Massage your gums by rotating the tooth-brush in a circular motion firmly, but not too hard, do this a few times top and bottom. This will help circulate the blood in your gums, making them pink. Remember to floss every day, before you brush. Be sure to brush at least 3 times a day, but 2 times a day is just fine.

I looked over your questions to see if I could find out your ethnic background. Your gums are most likely dark because of your genetic heritage. It's just pigment like you have everywhere else.

It is just plain ethnic reason if you are of Asian or African or Arab origin. If so, just don't bother. If you happen to be white of American or European origin, set up a consult with a Periodontist to get the simple procedure of depigmentation done - that too if you have esthetic concerns. Otherwise, just don't both bother. Healthy gums are more important than the color.
