He's trying to get you to disagree with him. He's feeling vulnerable. He wants to know he's OK with you. Its a catch 22. He puts himself down so he will feel accepted. But women are less attracted to guys who appear to have low self esteem, so it only magnifies the problem. Its why girls end up with arrogant jerks and guys who would do anything to be loved and accepted get stomped on by girls. Then they eventually either stop caring and become arrogant jerks themselves, or they really do lose their self esteem because they keep getting dumped for arrogant jerks and actually become the pathetic loser that they are afraid their girlfriend sees them as to begin with. Its a vicious cycle and nobody ends up happy except for the perceptive women like you who dare to ask the question and will actually give the poor guy a break and tell him what he needs to hear so he can become the kind of man you want him to be.

Since I don't know how his life was from birth, I can't assume that he puts himself down because he has "issues". Has anything major and maybe depressing made him feel this way? You should talk to him about it. Try to get him to express his true self to you and tell him that you support him in every way.

It'll take patience to understand why he puts himself down, but once you know the reason, help him get out of his phase and take his mind off that problem like doing something fun.

He thinks in a pattern of negativity. This may be a family trait - do people in his family always see the galss half empty? This kind of thinking can be reversed but it takes a conscious effort by him at first, but you could help. Ask your boyfriend to write down his ten best qualities. Use this info to help him think more positively about himself. Encourage him to try new things so he can experience new success and not fear failure. Try and make him see the bright side of life.
