Think local.
Try a local restaurant, bar, specialty shop, pizza place that has some bare walls and offer to hang your paintings there. If they say okay, it will be a good experience even if you sell nothing.
I read somewhere that this artist said his first art exhibition was in a pub:

Join your local art association. They have art shows to get your name around. Get your own website showing your art work. Send photos of your art work and your web site to local galleries. Ask your local library if you can exhibit your work. Stay away from Ebay, it is a money drain and art does not sell. Don't get discouraged, selling art is hard.
