Actually, I am trying to find out how many working, career artists are working in the USA and what percentage of the workforce they comprise.

It is difficult to get accurate statistics on this, but there are a few agencies that do research in this area, like the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts. Here are a few websites to try at this link. Hope it helps...

that's impossible because so many of us work under the radar and sell painting and other work for cash which in never reported the govt. has plenty of money to waste, see Iraq, congressional monetary abuse, etc etc getting a firm handle on the number of working artists would be hard also because many hold regular jobs then art is their other job after hours nights and weekends good luck in you work
