that is an awfully broad question. Do you have a big house or little house? Large yard or no yard? Kids or no kids? Do you have alot of time to devote? Do you want a dog requiring a great deal or grooming or none?
First of all, I would check your local animal shelter for mixed breeds. They tend to have less health problems, they many times appear more grateful for being rescued and there is no worries about too much inter breeding.
However - if a pedigree is a must...for a medium yard with or without kids...with some time to devote...a border collie is a smart faithful dog.
Want a smaller dog that needs room? Perhaps a Welsh Corgi or a basset hound?
If you are really all set for a large dog you might look into the labs or perhaps even german shepards.
If it where me...I would check the pound first and foremost. many times you can get their shots for free, help with spay and neuter and you saved a life.

Depends what you want, how much experience you have with dogs and what your lifestyle and personality is like. Each breed is different, and some are not for an inexperienced dog owner. I have had tons of different breeds and although I loved each dog I never fell inlove with a breed until I met and then got my first Lad. They are easy to train because of their high intelligence, they are one of the most affectionate and loving dogs you will find. They are extremely devoted and loyal. They are highly friendly and outgoing, as well as very versatile. My Lab by 1 knew 75 words and commands. We take him to parties we take him swimming and camping in the summer and in the winter he goes sledding and snowmobling with us. They are just one of the best well rounded and loving dogs you can find.
Go to the AKC website they give a good run down on pure breds.

Can you be a bit more specific with your life style?
Do you have children?
Do you jog? Do you have a yard or live on an acreage?
Will you be home with the dog?
How much dog grooming do you want to do?
What type of budget do you have to feed your animal?
How do you plan to train your dog are you dominent enough for some breeds?
These are all questions that need to be answered when you are chosing your breed.

you need to consider lots of things before you get a dog.
do you live in an apartment? or do you have a fenced yard with shelter for it to stay in? will the dog be able to come inside? do you have small kids, family members, or other pets that might take exception do a dog?
You also need to consider your financial situation. Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to illness, disease, & other physical problems, especially as they get older.
The other thing to consider is how many dogs are in shelters that need good homes. Pound puppies make great companions, especially since they are really grateful to have been rescued!
Getting a book on dogs would be a smart first move. Most of them have extensive info on breed characteristics.
Hope that helps, & good luck!!

It depends on your situation?!
If you live in an apartment, you need to look for a good dog that will cope with those living conditions, but if you live in a house, same thing.
And also, are there children or other animals around? Some animals have different needs and are more expensive.
Do you want a big dog or a little dog? If you want a big dog and have other pets or children, I would recommend a Golden Retriever or a Lab. They are very loyal and good with their owners and others. Check this site out....

It would depend on if you were going to breed, if you like a large dog, a medium, a small or a toy dog and long haired you would need to keep groomed, short haired nothing to groom, expense how much you would like to invest in a dog, what kind of breed or mix.

It all depends on what you like and where you live. Like me, I like the outdoors, so it would be natural for me to get a M-L dog to play with like a golden retriever. If you have limited space and are very quiet, get a small dog like a Corgi or a Basenjii.

It depends on where you live, how much time you can give to it, whether you have other pets, whether you have children, how much you're willing to spend... alot of things. I personally like labs, but they need alot of attention, especially puppies. Huskies are cute, affectionate, smart, and quiet, but they're very expensive (puppies can be up to $500). There are millions of choices, so think about your lifestyle before you get one.

It really depends on the environment you live in, and whether you want a small, medium, or large breed. Can you give more details please, for better answers?
