By profession he was a lawyer. He was learned in the law and the kind of person whom others consulted on the law's finer points.
He also had a trade: that of tentmaker. It would be a good policy for professional people, or those going on the mission field, to adopt nowadays.
But profession or trade isn't the same thing as occupation. By occupation he was a teacher, a preacher, an evangelist. "Woe to me unless I preach the Gospel of Christ!" That was his occupation and also his preoccupation. He was also a foreign correspondent to the churches.

What is the trick? He was a tent maker, and then a preacher-as bad, I am sure, as one of these televangelists on TV. Maybe, I should say-con artist, as they are.
