More info would have been helpful. If the dog is a full-grown adult and you know he had two testicles at an earlier time, the dog could have a hernia which allowed the testicle to ascend. The pain could be because the hernia subsequently strangulated a small piece of intestine. This could account for the pain you mention, as well as redness and swelling. This is also an emergency condition that could kill your dog. He should be taken to a vet ER.
If on the other hand, this is a younger dog and/or you don't think he ever had two testicles, the condition is likely less urgent. One-nut dogs are not uncommon. If you ever watch dogs being judged at shows, the first thing a judge does when he walks up to a male is to grope the dog -- if they're not both there, the dog is disqualified. It is not that the dog does not actually have two testicles, it is just that they did not both properly descend. I have a show German Shepherd, and this worried us for a while. He had one that stayed down and another that kept coming down and then going back up. If the inguinal ring that allows decension closed when the testicle was up, the dog would have not been qualified for show and would have needed surgery to ensure this did not result in cancer. If it closed while the testicle was down, we had a good show dog and nothing more would be needed to ensure his health. We got lucky and it closed while it was down.
I am not sure if a normal neutering would address the potential cancer, but I think it would. A vet could provide a better answer.
Bottom line: if this is a young dog, I would wait and see for at least a few more hours. If an older dog, I would seek immediate attention. I would also consider your location in relation to vet help. If you cannot get emergency help at any time, I would seek help as soon as possible.
Good luck.

Your dog may have an undecended testicle that would account for the pain. This also sometimes happens in humans. Your dog maybe infertile already due to this. I would get him "snipped" but, thats just a personal opinion to control animal overpopulation. Th redness and swelling is from him bothering it. You might want to give him a cool pack with a cold cloth in a ziploc bag or cool bath to ease the pain and swelling just don't leave it on too long. This is only a tempary relievf for your dog until he can be taken to the vet.Do not give him human pain killers!

You didn't say how old your dog is but by having one testicle his chances of getting cancer are increased big time! He should be or should have been neutered. Take him to the vet as soon as you can to have him neutered and treated.....if not too late.

Get him snipped first of all. It sounds as if one testicle has not descended. It is a painful disorder that affects male animals of all species. Essentially, it means that he is holding one inside - thus causing pressure on the one that has dropped.

Eh, i'd get him fixed. Unitesticle dogs are at risk for cancer. the other one is up in there somewhere, and it will cost a pretty penny to get him neutered, most likely.
