A sample is taken first to type your blood in case your condition becomes bad and you need an operation, then they know what your blood type is. Also it's typed to run for substance abuse or for HIV.

well if you are at fault then there would be a need to see if there are any illegal substances in your system. They never took and blood tests from me in a minor accident i was in and not my fault. i guess it depends on how bad was the accident and what kind of injuries were sustained.

In case at some point you might need a transfusion, they already know your blood type.
