Most people believe the more megapixels the better the camera. There are cameras out there with 4 megapixels that take excellent 8X10 photos when enlarged. There are some cameras that have 6 megapixels that don't have excellent image quality. You have to have a high quality lens.
Some cameras out there can take as much as 6 or 7 seconds before it lets you take your next shot; others 1 second. Battery life can come into play. Some cameras really eat up batteries.
Most compact cameras have 3X or 4X optical zoom and others have 10X and 12X optical zoom. Usually the more zoom, the more you pay.
Brands to consider: Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fugi. For my 2 cents worth I own a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 and my daughter has a Fugifilm FinePix S5200. Each can produce excellent 8X10 images when enlarged.

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z70,
trust me, i searched every camera in the world, and this one was by far the best. It also has 3X optical zoom, which i will explain below:
The digital zoom is just making things larger by using reduced data, whereas the optical zoom is using the lens to increase the size of the image and full image array.
Consider an image and divide it into 4 parts. To double the size of an image, it will actually be 4 times the size (remember, you are doubling the width, as well as the height). Well, the digital zoom is the opposite of that. If you double the image, you are using 1/4 of the image and duplicating the pixels (with perhaps some calculations).
I have disabled the digital zoom on my camera. If you want to zoom in, you can do so on your computer, but at least you have as much data (image) as possible.

This depends on what you need the camera for.
There are a couple of things to consider:
Size of the camera - do you want a small size camera or big one
Megapixels - unless you do crazy photo editing, you won't need anything above a 5 megapixel
optical zoom/digital zoom - This is the most important to me. The higher the optical zoom, the farther and clearer the picture you can take. on the other hand digital zoom gets fuzzy as you zoom in.
It depends what you want.
There are best one in each categories

Best camera companies, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Casio. Those are the companies I would buy cameras from. But me, I would only buy a Canon or a Nikon becuase both have excellent quality. But of course I narrow it down to the Canon A640. It takes excellent pictures for a Point and Shoot and it really is realitivy cheap, about $250.
Cameras I would stay away from, Kodak, because they make you download a lot of software and its picture quality never compares to Canons, Nikons, or Sonys.
And I forgot to say megapixels mean NOTHING to picture quality.

that obviously depends on how much you are willing to spend, and what you want to be able to do with it. My friend who is a professional photographer confirmed that Canon, and then Sony are the best digital cameras. I personally just bought the Canon Powershot S3 IS and have been very pleased.

any camera that has over 5 megapixels and at least 5 optical zoom is very good. you don't want digital zoom, optical is what you need. and megapixels make a HUGE difference. my camera is a olympus stylus 710 and its AWESOME. if you're not sure on what camera to get, just go to circuit city and ask advice from one of the dudes that work there

We just bought a Kodak Z650 and it rocks!! The camera and software are both easy to use. After you take pics, you plug the camera into your pc and the pics automatically download.
Part of our research involved reading customer reviews on Amazon.com. You might want to try this (it's free and hopefully unbiased). :)

CANON all the way.
go to best buy or circuit city on line. then click on canon. and compare with other cameras on line.
YOU WILL see that they offer so much more. OR go to your library or book store...and pick up the consumer reports book. and you will see how it compares. I GO TO consumer reports for EVERYTHING!! cars, flat irons, compuers, cameras etc. YOU NAME IT.
good luck and remember...you get what you pay for.
