Many people had to give up their religions or face death or torture. On the other side of the fence were many men who gained considerable power through "educating the heathens".

That pretty much sums it up in my opinion.

I know what you mean. Some are dedicated to the cause of spreading the Word and even some died for it, but some are dedicated to the cause of their expansions using Christianity.... it affects so many lives by their means and methods but as others perishes others persists but still the Word and its effects are spread all over the world.
I believe Spanish Kingdom under King Philip, has the responsibility on it and diminished of its power in the long run but its the evilness persists.
