Financial aid refers to the help a college student gets to attend college. It can come in the form of grants and loans. The sources of financial aid are the state and federal governments along with the college itself. The amount you receive is based on both the family income and resources. The FAFSA form is all that is needed to tap into financial aid, and the form is filled out after January 1 of your senior year of high school. However, there are other sources out there on locating money for college, too.

First, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships its current students can apply for consideration.

Second, the college financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will contain a list of scholarships, too.

Third, the public library has a book listing scholarships, and some of the scholarships are not located on the web.

Finally, join several free memership scholarship search websites, and this can be done now. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on the information you enter onto a form on its website.

Good luck!

Remember, having good grades and excellent SAT or ACT scores can help a student get merrit based scholarships.

There are scholarships, grants, and student loans available. The scholarships are based on academic achievement or sports accomplishments or a combination of both. So pick up your grades to the highest level you can and participate in scholastic and sports extra curricular activities. Grants are based on parents income as are student loans which you will have to repay after you graduate from college. If you have the time and can get better grades by applying yourself, a scholorship is something to shoot for. Talk to your high school guidance counselor about the best courses to take to prepare for the field you want to major in when you enroll in college.

Your first step is to sign onto www.fafsa.org which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid site.

Everything you need to know about applying for Financial Aid can be found on that site. You will need your parent's income tax information in order to apply. The amount of grants and student loans you are eligible for will be determined by your family income.
