Rebuild? Answered well above. Its an expensive proposition, I dont know if its your best option. It will keep all your numbers matching etc, but if its that worn, its had it. You are probably better of buying a used lower mile engine from a clean wreck, and using that as a parts donor. If the existing engine is not overly worn, you could try using an engine oil flush, changing oil with a quality synthetic oil & platinum plugs, and a couple of tanks of injector clean or octane boosted gas.
All you really need for simple tuning would be a mod chip, cold airbox, free breathing exhausts, good gas. These will run forever if kept relatively straight. Forget what anyone says about not using higher octanes, my Z32TT runs way cleaner on 97+ octane, and is noticeable quicker. Also get better mileage on it, usually 450km/tank. Not bad for 400+ hp. Enjoy your Zed car!

This question is too "vague" to have a specific answer. Lets try to answer some different scenarios:
NOTE: DO NOT BUY CHEAP PARTS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURES. BUY * O N L Y * NISSAN PARTS (unless you are modifying your car and need aftermarket parts, which is a different story)
1.- You want to just tune up your engine: for this, asuming your engine is good, you just need to buy a 60K kit at any Nissan dealer, and do a full check up to see if anything else is needed. The best thing to do is run a ECU test with a ECU tester or directly from the ECU. This should cost you around $400 for parts, plus labor. If you wish to do it yourself, you need good knoledge for the VG30DE engine, have good shop tools, and think to spend from half to a full day of work.
2.- Your engine is not running good: for this, a extensive troubleshooting have to be done, with a shop ECU tester (not a cheap Walmart or Discount Auto Part). An original Nissan 300ZX Mechanic Book (from Nissan, not Discount Auto Part) must be used unless you know the car like tha palm of your hand.
Price: can be from 1 cent to over 10 grand. It all depends of what is wrong with the engine/car.
3.- The engine is dead with no hope. Then forget about rebuild. IS NOT WORTH IT. Go to Nissan and buy a new engine, and just swap it. Trust me, it is the right and best or actually ONLY OPTION you should consider. it will save you money and headaches.
The only time you should consider rebuild is only if you are planning lots of aftermarket upgrades, or a twin Turbo Conversion if your car is a NA. Still, to do a conversion is better to just buy a new engine (VG30DETT) unless you plan to custom build it with bigger turbos.
Price: is very hard to tell, but have at least 5 grand to start. A full engine swap should be around there. A Twin Turbo COnversion should be around 10 grand. A full custom build could be any price, there is people that spend over 30 grand on upgrades, but the result is a powerful 300ZX with over 600 HP to the wheels.

As to what would constitute a rebuild...the engine completely torn down and cleaned (block, heads, etc.), then all new bearings and bushings, valves refaced, injectors replaced and serviced, all new gaskets (of course), also while you have gone that far the electrical system checked out, new thermostat, new filters (fuel, air, oil, etc.), new pollution items, and might as well put on new hoses. That covers the main issues, and yes we are talking so $$ here as all that does not come cheap.

For a rebuild will you be pulling the engine out or will the shop that rebuilds it do it? If YOU pull it out you would be looking at possibly $1800.oo to $2500.oo depending on the wear on hard parts. (crank, pistons, connecting rods, ect.) Foriegn parts are pricey!!!
For someone to just install power adders (bolt on) and have it computer tuned to maximum performance you can call around to any speed shop or a shop that dyno tunes. That might run you $50-75.oo/HR. Just price around and ask lots of questions.

They make rebuild kits, with all the parts you'll need. Look into it be calling an auto parts store.
Price--get a quote up front from any good builder. The cost varies by region of the country. Best of luck.

First you say "rebuild" then you say "tuned" the parts required for each are entirely different ! Plus most pros hate using parts provided by the customer which makes sense for both of you since if anything is wrong he will need to contact you to get things right, if he buys them it is on him to get things right! also he will get a much better price on the parts and be able to make a small profit on them! he is in the business to make "money" and will do better work for you if you let him

You are looking at around 45.4 hours labor for a remove and install and overhaul of your engine. If you are looking to have some performance oriented machining done to it the price will only get higher. Don't forget, that's only the labor flat rate, not including prices of parts.
Our labor rate at our shop is $58.00 per hour. Most places are much higher than this, I'll let you do the math and scare yourself.
