dont they realise that's why dogs attack kids. Dogs are used to looking up at us and when a tiny version of us comes running up, arms flailing and making giggling noises, the dog retaliates because it is scared. Please teach your kids it is wrong to approach a dog without first asking the owner if it is ok.

They should. Or why don't they take that subject to the schools, as well. It seems like anything not taught at home is now taught in schools.

I think kids should be taught to never approach an unfamiliar animal even if the owner is present. Kids do not always do as they are told so I agree that it is a two way street.
Dogs attack for many reasons other than what you have mentioned.
A stranger in their territory is especially dangerous and a child being small and relatively non intimidating to the animal is more likely to attack. Some dogs just snap and go on the attack whether adult or child is disturbing them.
My dogs have always been around children though even as puppies so they are more accustomed to having their tail or ear pulled and usually only respond with a half hearted bark. They have never been in the least bit frightened or concerned with kids.
So I think it is equally important to be expose your dogs to children as much as possible and their unpredictable nature.

The child's parent and the pet owner BOTH are to blame. My neighbors frequently let their children out to run around and they occasionally wander into my back yard. thank fully its fenced but even though my dog is growling and barking the kids are too stupid to leave so I have reminded them on a couple occasions that if they dont go away my dog will attack them. I have yelled at the kids twice and told them my dog doesnt like people. My dog is the biggest baby in all actuality But, I dont know what she would do if those kids ever tried to come into my yard . I also have 2 signs posted on my fence BEWARE OF DOG. People dont know which dogs are friendly and which are not. People need to watch their kids and keep them on a leash or in a fenced yard as well as pet owners do.

I think it is great when kids are so excited to see animals, but I do wish parents and other family would teach young ones safe ways to interact with animals.

I once was looking at kittens at Petsmart and had the opportunity to observe to different children both about the same age. One tapped on the plexiglass and tried to wake up the sleeping ones and the other little boy observed quietly with wide loving eyes.

Not all kids are so ill behaved and adults are culprits too. I once saw some kids in Wyoming throwing rocks at something they suspected to be a rattlesnake. They got off the boardwalk and onto the calcium deposits of the hotsprings to look closely at it. OMG I hope I raise my kids better.

I agree 100%. I think that it is horrible that they poor dog gets into trouble even though it was the kids fault. I also hate that people are stupid enough to leave their children unattended with any animal, and then blame the animal if it bites.

People should teach their children how to properly approach a dog. I am not saying that every bite is the kids fault, but many are. The dog owner is responsible in some cases, but not all.

My dogs are all well socialized, but any dog can bite if it feels threatened. Kids should ask before they pet a dog. One of my dogs is a rescue that was horribly abused, and even though he is very sweet and patient, if he gets mobbed by kids it scares him. It is not my fault that he was not properly socialized, and I am doing my best to socialize him now.

most people are STUPID. another thing that should be taught is, DO NOT ever let anyone around a dog when he is eating.how many times have you heard how nice and gentle their dog was. then some child gets mauled by the dog. the kid went over and was petting the nice dog, WHILE IT WAS EATING. like i said people and older kids are STUPID.
