Where is a good place besides Chuck-E-Cheese to host the party? And/Or what is a neat party theme besides characters?

You could have a beach party, or at the ice skating ring, or maybe the zoo, or hotel with pool. Also themes could be, a safari or, the Jungle, or maybe Di-noes, or Astronauts/space. Trust me they will be so happy they won't want to go to Chuck E Cheese ever again.

We have gone to parties at all kinds of places, and my kids always opt for the party at home. You don't have to do a lot of extra work. Typically some traditional games like musical chairs and pin the tail are fun ways to get things going, or settle if things get too rowdy. I would limit planned activities to maybe 2. The more "other stuff" I plan, the more distracted the kids are from what they WANT to do, which is just play. If it is nice out put them out in the yard with some balls, and if not, in the living room or playroom. They will have a ball and you won't have to do a thing. Themes are ok, but not necessary. I've found that they really just want to play together, and no one really cares if there is a Power Ranger cake and napkin or just one with birthday balloons. It will be most successful if YOU are relaxed and not stressed, so bake a cake, get some musical chairs going as an ice breaker. The kids will take it from there, and your pocket book-and child- will thank you later.

I just went to my niece's birthday party this weekend at the bowling alley. It was such a blast! She was turning 7, but my daughter who is 4 1/2 and some other toddlers were there and they were able to do it. The bowling alley provided pizza, drinks, ice cream, cake, all the decorations including balloons, hats, plates, EVERYTHING! Plus they had a bowling pin on the table that everyone signed and my niece got to keep it as a keepsake. I'm definitely going to do that next year for my daughter!

Do you have a place that has the tunnels where the kids climb through them, those places are a blast and they do host parties, I know most don't let you bring in your own cake, you have to use the one they provide. I'm not sure if they still do or not, but McDonald's used to host bday parties.

At home is always good. It means more work on your behalf, but a good old fashioned birthday will be appreciated by the children just as much, if not more.
Some themes could be Sports, where the children come dressed in the uniform of their fave sport, and you play games revolving around sport. Under the sea, Pirates, Circus or even a dress up where the children come dressed as something beginning with the first letter of your sons name.

rather than spend money on a place like that- if the weather is nice - do it at a playground - the kids will be able to run around and burn off all the sugar energy- the park was always a favorite for my little ones and my younger bros and sisters.

My nephew is 5 and he likes robots- you could do a robot party and bring supplies for them to build little robots or their own robot costumes
you could do a generic superhero party where they use clay or some other craft things to make up their own superhero- they could come dressed as superheros , etc

I had my daughters party at a Burger King that has an indoor play yard The price was good and the kids were having a blast playing and there was no mess for me to clean up. We made chocolate lollipops she picked out the figure that she wanted and when the kids were leaving she said thank you and passed them a lollipop.

Indoor playgrounds are fun or at your swimming pool/community centre.
I saw the cutest idea for a swamp party theme for boys. Check out www.todaysparent.com under the party ideas section.

Chuck-E-Cheese is way too expensive. Good choice for not going there. I'm not sure of alternatives since you haven't said where you live.

Red Robin is nice for kids. But your own home is the best bet because no extra germs to deal with. Ordering a bouncer is great fun. Or hiring a clown is great and you can make it a clown or circus theme.
