Any tips on painting the outside of a brick fireplace?

The brick is dull and rough. It goes to the ceiling and is about 7ft wide.

use a top quality primer first, 2 coats is best on a rough surface. have you considered plastering over the brick? i did that with my fireplace. i covered the brick with 1/4 inch thick particleboard sheets, then plastered over it with a great 1-step product from HD
