I have a walled patio and the cats are unable to scale the wall. They are however able to scale a tree inside the patio which is quite close to the wall. If they climb the tree they can get over the wall which, of course, is what i am trying to perevent.

Thanx,

You can get some nylon netting from a garden store. You want an ice-cream cone shape - wide at the top and held up by the branches that keeps it away from the trunk of the tree. Then you fasten the netting a little ways up the trunk. You have to get some sturdy garden twine to weave through the bottom of the netting to hold it tight to the tree.

The cats will start up the trunk and will not be able to get a firm "footing" on the netting so they can't get all the way up to the top.

It will do the job and you might not like it aesthetcally.

There are products at the pet store (bitter apple, etc) that you can sprinkle around the base of the tree or spray on the trunk. Cats hate citrus- so you could even just go buy some oranges/lemons at the market and squeeze the juice on the tree. That should discourage kitty from climbing. Warning though, you'll have to reapply every week or so until the cat finally gives up- or if it rains, you'd have to reapply right away.

You have three options
1. Build a higher wall
2. Destroy the tree
3. Train the cat to stay away from the tree by squirting it with water whenever it approaches. After a month or so of this the cat will realise that the tree is not to be approached.
Unfortunately it may think that whenever you are not there it can approach the tree anyway.

The other options all involve doing things to the cat that no SANE individual would suggest.

designate a "your doing something bad" command. NO usually works. You have to swing your finger at them too. There are Time out sprays and territorie sprays that you can buy. what they are is a scent that will prevent the cat from going near the object you want them to stay away from. Use only one word for a negative command. That way it is easier on them and you. DO NOT de-claw. Please don't! They will still try to climb and rip up their paws. They will bleed alot and your cats will soon have difficulty walking. (try the sprays)

sounds like all of us accept as true with the water element then haha close them outta the room once you're actually not homestead, and while your are, shop a small water gun ( not the huuuge great soakers teenagers play with) or a twig bottle once you're homestead! Gotta be (very extremely) merciless to be sort...in the event that they did not learn via the water approach, that they had learn via the tree-falling-down-on-the terrific option-of-them approach... All in all, thinking you may might desire to place the tree up lower back, in the event that they pulled it over, the water one seems easiest! additionally attempt to not enable something staggering cling from the backside of the tree, they are going to have an interest in it ! yet another element to attempt, is connect small bits of orange peel around the backside branches, cats (many times) HATE the scent of orange ( or perchance lemon might paintings,i'm unsure) sturdy success xxx

I think this is pretty much impossible unless you keep the cat inside, or you build a similarly high wall or barrier around the tree itself.

you could try making a large shelf that is slanted at 30 degrees. nail it round the tree/ like a collar. would stop the cat going very far.
or put carrier bags on tree - cats dont like them rustling.
why not let the cat roam. thats what they do.
