It matters in this instance. A 17 year-old still has some maturing to do. 20 and 40 is a much different story though, I think that is okay.

I think different wants and needs come with different ages. Someone who is 17 has different interests than someone who is 40. A person who is 40 may want to get married and have kids. I think once the youngest person is in their mid-20's to 30's age starts to matter less and less.

I think it matters because the 17 year old will go through a lot of changes before he or she is mature. And by the time he or she is 40, the 40-year-old will be 63.

Not usually, but that's a huge age difference. I think it does matter in that case.
What would a 40 year old want with a 17 year old? That's plain disgusting.

I don't think age matters if the love is true and no one is being used for sex or money or something in the relationship. (I'm a 19 year old girl, I'm just using my boyfriend's account, by the way.) When I was 18, I dated someone that was 31. I set boundaries about sex (there was little of it so I knew I wasn't being used) and the connection was real. It's all about maturity levels and trusting your gut instincts and the person that you are with.

I don't think it matters, to a certain extent. I think 17 and 40 is too much of a gap. 1 think 10 years would be the maximum for me personally. But, I'd make an exception for Ville Valo who is 14 years older than me. :-)

Wow....you know at 17 age is a big deal...however...my husband to be is 8 years younger then me...We are both adults with a lot of life experience...my son is in love with a 36 year old woman he is 19...I don't think that one will last...
I think the first thing you really need to do is HONESTLY look at what you are getting out of this...
When I was younger I dated alot of older guys...they just seemed cooler and could buy booze...that is not a good reason...
I think you should experience more life then rethink this question....
Talk to your parents....we are not as dumb as 17 year olds think....

That's a child with a middle-aged person...what could they possibly have in common? Unkewl...I'd hate to think what the motivation actually is (it's not romantic love)

It depends. Is it really love? There should be nothing that matters when it comes to true love. But there will be obstacles in a relationship such as this.
